In todays world of banking, it is important to protect yourself against identity theft. Abby Patircio is the Asst VP of Security and Patrick is a digital banking analyst. Abby talked about ID theft and pointed out that there are many opportunities for fraud. Prevention is the key and it is strongly recommended you follow some good practices. Watch your mail and make sure the regular things like utility bills show up when they are supposed to. Call and inquire if you don't receive a statement or other document which contains personal information. When using a credit card, make sure no one is too close and watch out for skimmers - devices attached to the ATM that can read cards. Be aware of phishing - fake emails from criminals. The emails look legitimate using official looking logos, but banks will never ask for your account numbers on the internet. People have reported calls from the IRS saying they owe taxes and face arrest. These too are fraudulant. Chip cards are becoming more pervasive - they offer an extra level of security which does not use the magnetic strip. Patrick feels the magnetic strip will eventually go away as chip cards take over.

Other tips:
Don't carry cards you don't or rarely use. Use strong passwords and change them monthly including your email passwords which can also be compromised. Banks will never ask you to verify credentials or submit information online. Look at your credit reports - you are entitled to a free report every 4 months. Experian, Equifax and TransUnion are 3 places you can go. If traveling, call your credit card company and let them know as well as when you are leaving. Its recommended you use a travel card when leaving the country. Watch out for malware and spyware and don't open links from an email whose sender you don't recognize.

If your account is compromised, close the account and open a new one. File a police report with your local police and contact the federal trade commission.
