Program: The Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation

L-R: Sandy Maniscalco and Patty Burmahl

Rick introduced Sandy Maniscalco, Director of Development and Outreach for the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation. Since Norma Logan established the organization in 2006, and was named soon after the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation for Terri Brodeur who passed in 2005 from this disease. In 2006 over $200,000 was raised in the cancer walk. Patty Burmahl, spoke about their fundraising efforts and is proud to say that 100% of proceeds raised in the cancer walk, their signature fundraiser, funds research for finding a cure to this disease that claims a life every 13 minutes. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime (246,660 in the US). It's the second leading cause of death. The Walk Across Southeastern CT takes place on the first Saturday of October each year. It starts in Old Saybrook and ends at Camp Harkness in Waterford. Expenses, which are kept low, are covered by volunteers and sponsors. To date, 37 grants totalling 3.7 million dollars have been awarded for research in immunology, genetics and other areas. A scientific advisory committee directs funds for research. Physicians from Dana Farber and other institutions study the causes and mechanisms of breast cancer with a goal of discovering a cure.
There are many ways to get involved, you can volunteer at an event, be a sponsor, walk, or serve as a Board Member.
Please go to www.tbbcf.org to find out more about The Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation.

The meeting ended with the Rotary 4-way test.
