Public Affairs Officer US Dept. Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate Plum Island Animal Disease Center
The mission of the lab is the study of foreign animal diseases. No foreign animal disease in the US. Animal to animal disease control. They welcome visits from school science groups. The food supply, meat, in the US is the best in the world for example US spends 8% on food, Europe 15%, Russia and China 25%.
Homeland Security has taken over the operation of the lab from The Dept of Agriculture. Bio Safety at Plum Island Level 3 the new lab in Manhattan, KA will be Level 4. The new lab will be state of the art 21st century and concentrate on identifying diseases of the future.
Plum Island will say in business thru 2023. Homeland Security owns Plum Island and the plans are to sell the Island when the lab closes.
