Program: Bill McLaughlin introduced our speaker, Atty. Victoria Mueller of New London
Victoria, having just passed the bar exam, is a practicing attorney. She helped start the Rotaract Club of New London of County. There are 7 Rotaract Clubs in Connecticut, 6 are affiliated with colleges and New London is not. The club consists of members in the 18 to 30 year old range. Chartered Nov. 2010, they started meeting in an Irish Pub at 6:30 on Friday nights and is casual - no attendance rules. They have since moved to the Thames Club. Meetings take about an hour and like our club, they have speakers. There are about 35 members.
They often partner up with other clubs, assisting with projects and programs such as providing a pool of volunteers at the soup kitchen. The club raises money for various causes including New London High School. This age group is mobile and consists of professionals of all kinds. For Victoria, Rotaract provides an opportunity to give back in a steady structured way with fewer obligations which can hinder ability to belong at this stage in her life. Like us, membership is an issue and they are always trying to gain new members. Dues are just $20. The club has a great fundraiser that has enabled them to donate to various local causes such as the Covenant Shelter, high school programs and other local causes. One of the members designed a tee shirt with the theme similar to the I Love NY idea but incorporates a whale and New London. After quickly selling out of tee shirts and getting additional orders, they have increased offerings to sweat shirts and other apparel.
