Program: Gerri introduced our speaker Lin Smith, Volunteer & Program Director Clinton Pantry Manager (Shoreline Soup Kitchen and Pantries)
Lin is a retired professional chef. She started her career as a short order cook and retired as a regional manager of a gourmet food service company. She has been at her current position for 10 years. She also managed the Clinton pantry for the SSKP for 10 years.
Lin started by thanking the club for its support through the years. Every week, 2500 people are served and the need is as great now as its ever been. The Pantry is set up like a store with different food categories. People receive food in an amount proportional to their family size. The Pantry was started 13 years ago. In 2012, 937 people used the pantry, 2/3 of those were from Old Saybrook.
There are 8 meal sites and 4 pantries. People need the services for a variety of reasons. 17,000 meals were served last year in the 11 town service area which is an increase of 4%. One must earn $18/hr to be self-sufficient. Funding comes from the CT Food Bank which is government regulated. It provides food at highly discounted prices. Other sources included corporations, churches and supermarkets. Stop & Shop donates frozen meats that have expired for regular sale. There is an emergency supply which has not run out yet. 85% of every dollar donated goes to food, there is very little overhead.
Pictured is President Gerri Lewis and outgoing President Keith Wescovich present a check for $1000 to Lin Smith.
