ANNOUNCEMENTS

Good morning all.   Yesterday's meeting was amazing.  Dr. Paul Spiekermann was so engaging and charming...or as Rick Benson would put it...he's a hoot!  Dr. S told me that per capita our club contributed the most in funding toward this Global Grant in an effort to control/eradicate Dengue Fever in Indonesia.  We've done a good thing, folks.  Thank you!  FYI, I had informed Evie Lindquist that it was a portion of the memorial donations in Al's name that funded this Global Grant and she was elated.  She is currently writing thank you notes to all who donated to Rotary in Al's name.  Thanks Evie.

Dr. Paul Spiekermann

Dr. Paul Spiekermann

Our guests yesterday were: Jan Perruccio, Superintendent of Schools was with us again (potential new member); Rick Benson, who is our Rotary District Foundation Chair and Past District Governor who was the "driver" of Dr. S; Rick and Dr. S are from the Westport (lunch) Club; Maurice Raymond, visiting (again) Rotarian from Lakeland, FL.; and Bob Ames visiting Rotarian from Venice Sunrise Club in Venice, FL.

Our Liberty Bank Turkey Drive kick-off is upon us already!  Next Thursday and Friday there are breakfast meetings hosted by Liberty Bank.  I will be attending one of them and others from the club are welcome and encouraged to come with me.  Kathy is checking her schedule at work to see if she can attend and I look forward to hearing from you if you wish to attend.  As many of you who wish to attend, are invited.  The breakfast runs from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 A.M.  The breakfast kick-off meetings are in Middletown and Norwich. Thanks.

As I mentioned yesterday, it's time to renew our membership in The Chamber.  I received an email yesterday afternoon from The Chamber advertising their annual EXPO which will be at the YMCA this year on October 10th, from 5:30 - 8:30 P.M.  The cost for a table is $250/businesses and for non-profits $150.  I think this is a no-brainer...we should have a table displaying our brochures; our directories (which will be printed by then) and a big "WHY JOIN ROTARY" sign.  I'm thinking $150 well spent??!!!  Please let me hear from you...last year my law office participated and it was fun networking with everyone and the exposure is great!  We need to network and continue to grow our membership.  Would appreciate your feedback please....

As you are all aware, our District Governor Rick Bassett will be in Old Saybrook for his "official" visit to our Club.  AG Jack Solomon will be attending as well.  This is a special meeting folks.  You are welcome and encouraged to invite guests if you wish.  Most of you met Rick at my installation dinner at the Saybrook Point Inn.  He would like to meet with the Club Board early before the meeting at 6:30 a.m. (yawn) for about 20 minutes.  This is a test of early morning fortitude or your alarm clock...hopefully one of these works.

Additionally, next week DG Rick will be installing 3 new members: Eric Reisner (Westbrook); Amber Scherber (Old Saybroook); and Christy Burnham (Old Saybrook).  Amber has informed me that she will be bringing her husband and three daughters to our meeting for her installation.  We are fortunate to have these 3 new members in the Rotary Club of Old Saybrook.

Amber, who is also our Interact Advisor, has informed me that the first Interact Club meeting will take place at the high school on September 10th at 2:30 P.M.  It would be awesome if any Rotarians could attend that meeting.  Amber, I'm sure, will give us an update as well.  The Interact kids do lots of really great things!

I will be attending the Rotary Success Seminar with Ken Roche on Saturday, September 7th.  There is still time to sign up.  This is for leadership team members, new members and ALL members of Rotary.  Thanks, Ken.

In October, we have 5 weeks of meetings.  So the last Wednesday, October 30th, we will be having another evening dinner meeting.  Glen is researching the possible locations for this dinner meeting.  Thanks, Glen.  So, mark your calendars folks.  Marty will be giving us a crash course on navigating our OS Rotary website at this meeting.  Thanks, Marty.   Remember to check the website: OSRotary.org for your "Meals-on-Wheels" assignment says Bill McLaughlin.  Thanks, Bill.

Finally folks, your dues should be paid in full by October 1st, please.  I mistakenly noted November 1st in my last update.  There are still a few outstanding.  You will be receiving invoices via email from Glen shortly.  Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Great breakfast again, Stu, Kelly and Marilyn.  Must tell you everyone talked about the scrumptous strawberries 2 weeks ago...thanks, Stu!  Great to be with you at The Estuary....it's cool, bright and lots of room...wait until the DARE kids come!  (Not until May, 2014...phew).

Upcoming Rotary Programs:

  • 9/11: (next week) DG Rick Bassett;  he's bringing pins!
  • 9/18: First Selectman Old Saybrook: Carl Fortuna - State of the Town
  • 9/25: Tony Plansky: Life Care

Thanks, all, and kindly remember to tell me if you are bringing guests to a meeting so we can let Stu know for food.  Have a good week, enjoy the weather and be well.
