Susan talked about the Affordable Care Act also known as Obamacare. Unlike the federal website, the State Access website is working well. 200,000 people have signed up for insurance thru the exchange most of whom have had no insurance. There are many plans to choose from with varying deductibles and options. You can select from bronze, gold, silver, and platinum plans and pick the one that fits your budget. There are low income plans and you can link to the state Husky and Medicaid plans. People on Husky may lose their insurance if they get a job and income is over $600/mo. To qualify for Medicaid, you can make up to $16K/yr. Its a tiered system where the more you make the more you pay. There are tax credits if your total adjusted gross income is less than $25K.
According to the new law, you have until March 15, 2014 to get health insurance or you incur a penalty of $95. Businesses with over 50 full time employees have a 1 year grace period to offer insurance to their employees.
Preventative care will be free which will result in long term savings. Nationally 12 million people go without health insurance and the Affordable Care Act is designed to fix that.
