Program: Paul Doyle, Executive Director Estuary Counsel of Seniors
Paul has been the director since Sept. 2013 and brings a wealth of experience serving on boards for many nonprofits. Paul spoke mostly about the Meals on Wheels program which has 4 sites: Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, Clinton and Westbrook. The Estuary practices the 3 E's: Education, Exercise and Extremely Fun. In January they opened a new fitness center and offer classes in Ti Chi, yoga and strength training. Other activities include art classes, needlepoint, knitting, driving and card games. The goal is to keep people active by feeding body and mind. The silver tsunami is coming and more seniors will be using these services in the near future. Old Saybrook is one of the last congregant sites that does its own cooking for Meals on Wheels. We have our breakfast meetings here every Wednesday and the kitchen staff does a great job! This year they celebrate their 40th anniversary.
Grants come from state and surrounding towns so fundraising and grant writing are regular activities for management. The total budget is about one million dollars. The sequester cost the Estuary about 10% funding and for 2014 a 1% increase is anticipated. Meals are under stringent controls for nutrition and portion size. There is an emphasis on the quality of the food and a Title 3 requirement is a review every 3 years.
On May 17 there will be an intergenerational event - parents night out on Saturday evening. The Old Saybrook Interact Club will be involved.
