Program:
Lymes' Youth Service Bureau director, Mary Seidner, presented a program about it's Prevention Coalition.
The goal is to lower drug and alcohol use by middle and high school students through a variety of programs planned by the students under the direction of the Youth Service Bureau. High school students, Kathleen Stedman and Hugh Cipparone, spoke about the Freshman 101 Program and it's many and varied activities. They decided to determine our knowledge of drugs and drug abuse with a ten question test that is also given to the high school students during "Drug Facts Week". Judging by the response of our members when the correct answers were given, we did not distinguish ourselves as drug experts. We did, however, pick up some valuable information. Recent student surveys indicate that the Prevention Coalition is having a positive affect on student behavior. Marijuana use has remained the same or dropped a little over the past several years while alcohol use has shown a significant decrease. The OS Rotary will continue to support this worthwhile project.
