Dr. Ralph Stroup, from the Yale School of Medicine, described a project aimed at Health Care Initiatives for Kenya. Started in 2008, the project addresses health care, clean water and food security. A clinic has been built along with several solar powered well water pumps. Dr. Stroup invited OS Rotary to participate with several other area Clubs in a Global Grant in Kenya. The grant will be for a number of projects in Ntalabany, Kenya where the non-profit, Kenyan Health Care Initiatives will soon break ground on a primary health clinic. The local villagers currently walk about 6 hours across elephant lands to the nearest clinic. Once the clinic is completed, our Kenyan partners plan to build a nurse's quarters and a pre-school as well. Funds will be used for capital equipment for the clinic, solar lighting, solar refrigerator, community water well, and a drip irrigation greenhouse. Five area Clubs have already pledged $10,000 another $7,400 is needed to completely fund the $42,000 project. A Q and A session followed the power point presentation.
This dinner meeting, which was held at Luigi's Restaurant, adjourned at 9:15pm.
