Program:
Glen Anderson presented 2 students who attended the World Affairs Seminar at Carroll University the last week of June. Carmen Borca-Carillo from Westbrook and Hunter Stuart from Old Saybrook gave an excellent presentation, talking about what they did, what they learned and how they grew from the experience. Both Carmen and Hunter are members of their schools' Interact Club.
The theme was World Energy and topics discussed included, who has access and who doesn't, what do you use energy for, how can we use energy more efficiently, what role does energy play in political, economic and crises that arise. There were a wide range of speakers including Troy Henagan from GE, a representative from the UN, Johnson Controls and more. Students were given a Capstone Project - 10 people gave 10 minute presentations on energy which could be a slide show, music video, skit, whatever. Leadership, research and teamwork skills were employed to complete the project. They went on field trips, GE power plant, Museum of Engineering and more. In their spare time, the kids got to know each other and make new friends. There was a talent show, soccer tournament and karaoke. The counselors were encouraging and inspiring.
The kids told us that just 200 square miles of solar panels could potentially power the entire USA. We need to change our behavior and become more energy efficient which means shutting off lights when leaving a room, not wasting food or leave water running needlessly. Micro grids are the way to future, especially if renewable sources are deployed like solar power. The current centralized grid system is inefficient and need to be replaced.
The kids were inspired and very grateful to be given the opportunity to attend this seminar. They learned to be independent, learn teamwork and develop leadership skills.
