Program: Our speaker was Rick Olisky of Uplands Construction Group LLC

Uplands Contruction is one of the contractors that provides home energy solutions for the state program known as Energize CT. Energize CT is all about home energy improvement by making your home more energy efficient. The program is administered by Eversource and United Illuminating. Connecticut residents receive a reduced rate of $99 on their assessment which is funded by a charge on your electric bill. When residents have an energy audit done, towns get points which can be redeemed for energy efficient town projects.

The mission of Energize CT is making homes safer, healthier and more comfortable while eliminating causes of higher energy bills. Testing is performed for carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, gas leaks and mold. Drafts that may result in heat or air conditioned air loss is identified and sealed. Blower door, ducts, combustion safety, window efficiency, insulation, appliances and heating/cooling system tests are performed. Icicles and ice dams forming in the gutters may be a sign of heat loss from poor insulation. Technicians are background checked and must be certified by the Building Performance Institute. Some fixes are done on the spot, energy efficient light bulbs are given and water saving measures are done. When the audit is completed a kitchen table wrap up where the tech explains everything and recommendations are made. Typically over $1100 a year can be saved if the recommendations are followed.

The audit costs $99 and for qualifying low income families the fee is waived. For some jobs such as converting oil to gas heat, there are rebates available. There are 0% interest loans available under CHIF (CT Housing Investment Fund) for jobs under $3K and 2.99% loans available up to $25K. There is a "smart-eloan" as well.
