OS Rotary Meeting 05/11/22

Happy Bucks: Most were for the students, teachers, and administrators; many for the Wine Tasting Event on 5/6; several for the great day; and the Saybrook Point Resort and Marina for hosting the Student of the Month Breakfast.

Program: Student of the Month – Business Education

     Tara Winch, principal of Westbrook High School, presented a brief history of the award and explained its link to the Rotary’s International Polio Plus program.  Tara introduced the teachers, administrators, and the students from each of the schools.

Lyme/Old Lyme High School: Aiden Ward

     Assistant Principal, Jeanne Manfredi, and Business Teacher, Leslie Traver, described Aiden as a student who is always smiling, respectful, and one who works to serve others. When Aiden had taken all the available business courses, he simply created his own course. He is a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society, and the Service Club. Aiden will be attending Stonehill College majoring in accounting.

Old Saybrook High School: Jack Gatta

     Business Teacher, Terri Linn, highlighted Jack’s desire to learn and described him as a “young man who has got it together.” He has taken all the business courses available and has produced a video used at a professional development day by the OSHS faculty. Jack will be attending Quinnipiac University majoring in Film/TV.

Westbrook High School: Samuel Freeman

     Business Teacher, Susan McManus, described Samuel as a gifted athlete, a quiet leader, a class scholar, and a person who knows the right thing to do. He is so involved in school activities that “his resume’ had to be extended to two pages”. Samuel is the Class Valedictorian and will be attending the University Of Connecticut majoring in Business management.

President’s Update: The Scholarship Committee reported that 9 scholarships have been awarded and will be presented at each school’s awards ceremony at the end of the school year. The scholarships ranged from $3,000 to $6,000 and included the Brent Taylor Memorial Scholarship.

Paul Harris Dinner is on 5/18 at the Old Lyme Country Club. No noon meeting on the 18th.

Wine Tasting Event: Wrap up
     Marty thanked the entire club for a “Team Effort” that resulted in a hugely successful event. The net profit will be around $24,000. Thanks, Marty, for your leadership and dedication that resulted in the record setting event.
