PROGRAM: Reading the World Inc. Kris Nystrom
Kris was a teacher for 36 years, upon retiring he founded “Reading the World Inc.” with a mission to:
- To address school deserts, places with limited or no educational opportunities.
- R.T.W Inc. goes to the schools and asks what are your needs and then works to fill the need.
- When there are multiple children in a family, often only 1 child can go while the others stay home to help with daily needs such as bringing potable water home from a well that is a good distance away. Boys take precedence over girls. Sometimes families will rotate children to school so there is no consistency in learning.
- Why Africa? A large percentage of the population is without schooling of any kind. Estimates are that by 2050 one in four people will be living in Africa. Kris is leaving soon for Uganda for 5 months to help train literacy educators.
What can we do to help?
- Develop reading clinics.
- Help build schools.
- Remember illiteracy is a moral issue and is a multi trillion dollar cost to the world economy. For more information visit: www.readingtheworldinc.com
