Student of the Month, Jan Perruccio
Due to scheduling restraints, we honored both students for December (Social Studies) and January (Science). SOM will resume in the spring.

December, Social Studies
L-R: Ryan Engels (Wesbrook HS), Izzadora Reynolds (Lyme-Old Lyme HS), Logan Worman (Old Saybrook HS)
January, Science
L-R: Enzo Adorno (Westbrook HS), Anna Davis (Lyme-Old Lyme HS), Kaylin Laskowski (Old Saybrook HS)

Jan presided over the SOM presentation and started by saying its her favorite meeting. We have to alter the normal schedule due to Saybrook Point's winter hours. Today, we honor students for December (Social Studies) and January (Science) and will resume SOM in the Spring. Jan complemented the 6 students in attendance saying they are inspiring in the way they conduct themselves. Jan pointed out that OS Rotary will make contributions to the Polio Plus Program in their names as well as giving them $25 to use as they see fit. Jan gave a background on the disease Polio which afflicted millions before a vaccine was developed. Today its almost irradicated but the effort continues until it is totally irradicated.

Social Studies:

  • Ryan Engels from Westbrook helps bring people together as evidenced on the soccer field. He made first team all-shoreline as their goalie. He is very active in class. Ryan will pursue political science and possibly go on to law school.
  • Logan Worman of Old Saybrook HS takes a lot of advanced courses. He has not settled on a school yet but hopes to pursue environmental engineering.
  • Izzadora (Izzy) Reynolds of Lyme-Old Lyme is passionate about her activities and shows overwhelming enthusiasm in everything she does. She is focused and is a natural leader. She would like to take after her father (Reynolds Suburu) and be a business owner one day.

Science

  • Enzo Adorna of Westbrook is way beyond high school level science, taking UCONN courses. He is self taught in the oboe. His science project was building a linear accelerator. Enzo has applied to top schools (MIT, Georgia Tech, NYU) and hopes to study nuclear science.
  • Kaylin Laskowski of Old Saybrook thanked everyone for this honor. She is a leader who does stellar work. She enjoys anatomy and physiology and will pursue study in neuroscience or biochemistry.
  • Anna Davis of Lyme-Old Lyme is quiet, strong and composed. She joined the robotics team and took to it which gave her direction in her future pursuits which will be engineering.

Pats updates

  • We will be receiving the ARPA check this week. Pat applied for the funds to make up for lost revenue when we had to cancel the Wine Tasting due to Covid-19 in 2021. The amount is $24K. Well done! Now we have to decide how to spend it.
  • Wine Tasting: Marty and Pete discussed updates the main one being the addition of Nicole Nalepa who will be hosting with colleague at WFSB, Scot Haney. Nicole is an AM anchor and TV host who lives in Old Saybrook. This adds to the star power and will make selling tickets and general promotion easier. Printed materials including tickets, posters, flyers, letters, etc. will be ready soon and plan on distributing after the holidays.
  • Membership: Pete is speaking to another prospective member and invited her to a meeting.
  • Speakers: Next week we meet at the Acton Public Library on the 2nd floor. Bring your own lunch if you care to. Joan Winters will be playing her violin as only she can!
Please see the meeting schedule for future meeting information.
  • Joan Winters, as head of publicity, is having an article about the club published in the Harbor News. Joan plans on getting the Students of the Month in the paper as well.
  • She is also working on our Facebook page.
  • Website: Marty reports that new content goes in all time. Use the website as a resource to stay up to date on club functions and events. You can also use it to download forms such as Wine Tasting forms.
  • Torchlight Parade: Our part went very well! We had enough hot chocolate and pastries to go around. We had an excellent crew who braved the cold in the open air (unheated) tent. Special thanks to John Gianinni who made the hot chocolate and Gary McCauley for gathering the pastries - both were big jobs! This was our 34th year of hosting the hospitality tent.
