Speaker
Kerry Knobelsdorf is an attorney who specializes in Elderly Law. Kerry spoke of the Probate Court system and why she feels it is extremely important. The probate system is often the only means for managing the assets of people who can no longer do so on their own. The state does not do this and many people are without family members who can or will manage their assets. Though the Probate system has come under attack recently, Kerry pointed out that much good is done - the good things don't grab headlines and tend to be done quietly. Probate courts are much more accessible than large courts that tend to get bogged down with heavy case loads and judges are not easy to reach. They are simply not equipped to handle the volume of personal cases. Probate courts see to it that assets are not squandered and that people, many of whom cannot make prudent decisions, are protected. They arrange to have people evaluated by doctors and all concerned are invited to attend the hearings. Decisions may be appealed to the Superior Court.
