Clark Maxson, Mgr Engineering Dept, Dominion Power was with us this morning to talk about happenings at Dominion and the nuclear industry. Dominion is a diversified company dealing in power production, wind , hydro, nuclear, a delivery division, and a gas division. Fortune 500 company.
Nation wide the industry produces 24,700 megawatts of nuclear power, about 20% of the nations needs. Locally Millstone produces 870 megawatts with #2 and 1,240 with #3 for a total of 2,110 megawatts. Fuel rods are stored in a water bath and in dry storage on site. Yucca Mt and a new fuel reprocessing plant is presently operating out West.
Clark discussed the value of the Institute of Nuclear Power as an excellent training tool, with plant evaluation and education.
By 2030 our national power consumption will increase by 30% As we retire our existing plants at about the same time 2030 they must be replaced. Twenty two new plants are in planning stages with 2 in Ga and 2 in TX under construction Dominion plans to add a nuclear plant to it's existing facility in VA.
DOE focusing in gas plants risky with the volatility of gas pricing.
