SPEAKER: Principal Barton comes to us from New Haven where he taught for 7 years in the public schools and then 15 years as director of a Charter School in New Haven. As a treacher Oliver organized a parkland program to teach health and nutrition as connectd to the enviroment.
February 1997 a Charter School was approved by the State and Oliver had the school up and running by August of the same year.Charter school focus on each class room each day and is beholden to the state not a local school board.
Posotive climate at Old Saybrook High School. All around support from administration, faculy, parents, and the students themselves all working together.Department heads are running a good show. Used phrase "formative assessment" , builds on present knowledge, develop self direction and skills to learn.
Asked the Rotarians to get involved as mentors. Help is need and the rewards are great, simply ask Augus MacD
