Program
Peter introduced our speaker/member – Keith Wescovich

Keith’s topic was about a Bio Sand Water Filter program started in our District for needy villages and families in India. Keith talked about his recent visit there and how he interfaced with local Rotary clubs and those involved in the project. Keith started by telling us a little about India, namely that the roads are really, really BAD, and the people are really, really GREAT.

The water in India is very bad on the surface, and water table has dropped to 6-800 feet, making it very expensive to drill wells. The Hamden Club started donating sand filters, and once the villagers saw that they worked, everyone wanted them and the project really took off. The filters are made locally at the rate of 7 or 8 per day. The production is very scalable, and the operation could be duplicated in another location to double the number of units. The filters are built at a cost of about 1500 rupees ($25?) and sold to needy families for about 800 rupees (earnings of about 5.5 days of work). The filters are supplied free to schools and seed villages.
