Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) report: David Wight
On Feb. 25, five students from Old Saybrook, Westbrook and Lyme-Old Lyme high schools attended this program. They are: Nicholas Walker (L-OL), Taylor Miller (L-OL), Scott Nicoll (Westbrook), Jade Nardi (Westbrook), Gaby Carvajal (OS). Scott, Jade and Gaby each took a turn telling the club what RYLA did for them and thanked the club for sponsoring them (Nick and Taylor were unable to attend the meeting). Gabby learned important lessons in time management. Jade said it was a life changing experience and gained new insights learning about true leadership. All the students made new friends from other schools around the state. This is a great program that our club has participated in for many years.

John Donnelly - Report on Ghana
John was in Ghana last week and was happy to report on the progress of the school that Rotary funds have supported. Thanks to this support, the library has more books, new latrines have been built and other necessities such as desks and chairs have been supplied. John noted that supplying his and her student latrines is key to keeping girls attending school the whole month. On March 6, John witnessed the celebration of Independence Day which featured a marching drill competition from 8am to 1pm. The school we supported in District 1 won many awards including $1000 for academic excellence. John is working with Steve Mecca from RI to gain more grants and make this program sustainable into the future. Its not just about literacy anymore but something beyond just learning to read.
