Program: Joan Michaud introduced our speaker, Joseph Camerford of the Estuary Transit District
The 9 Town Transit (9TT) is operated by the Estuary Transit District (EDT) and serves the 9 towns of the Estuary region providing public transportation for very low cost - $1.25 one way with free connections. Children and seniors ride free. There are routes from Clinton to Old Lyme to Chester, Old Saybrook to Niantic to Norwich, Old Saybrook to Middletown and there will be new connections to expand their reach to Hartford. They are also known as the 9 Town Transit which is a public entity and not affiliated with the Estuary.
They have received a grant to make the service easier to use, such as putting up bus signs along Rt. 1 to identify a stop and bus shelters will be going up to protect commuters from the elements. New software is coming that will allow people to manage trips. A GPS system will let people know when the bus is coming. New buses were purchased with a 20-person capacity due to increased demand. Buses cost about $80,000 each and a hybrid upgrade would add about $50,000 to the cost. Bus passes can be purchased at any Stop & Shop. Joseph provided us with informational brochures/schedules.
