Paul is an avid gun collector going back a long time. While in the service, Paul shot competitively and trained people for marksmanship skills and sniper training. Paul showed about 10 of his prized possessions and gave an in-depth talk on some of the nuances of the different models as well as the ammunition. One of Paul's most prized rifles was given to him by his uncle - a 44-40 purchased in 1921. This is the gun that won the west. His uncle hunted fish with it. At that time, you shot into the water and the shock waves brought the fish to the surface where they could be captured. This gun holds a special place in Paul's heart, his father wasn't a hunter but his uncle was and he is the reason Paul got into hunting and then took this sport to a higher level.
Paul showed a Winchester 71m 348 caliber built for hunters in the west and Alaska to hunt bear and other large animals. His Ruger single shot model 1 can accomodate a variety of calibers. Paul showed a gun made in Germany that had 2 triggers. One trigger could be used at any time to fire the gun, if you have time, the second (back) trigger could be used to "set" the front trigger for increase sensitivity and make it a hair trigger.
Paul is an avid hunter. His range is about 450 yards with a 30-0-6. He refills his own shell casings which can be refilled 20-30 times. Paul has a tool for refilling shells and he can do about 50 an hour. Paul mentioned that lead can no longer be used for fowl shooting due to environmental concerns.
Paul showed an elephant gun that takes a 375 H&H magnum cartridge. Its used to shoot large and dangerous animals. In northern Africa, it is legal to hunt elephants as there is an over population there. Elephants have 7 sets of teeth and when the last set wears out, they die of starvation because they can no longer chew. Elephant meat from hunting is given to local villages where it is consumed with no waste. Paul showed a gun that can take 3 different barrels. They can be changed in the field to suit the hunter's conditions such as range needed and prey (deer, bear, etc.). Paul went into the aerodynamics of bullet flight. Bullets fly in a gyroscopic action which produces something of a corkscrew flight line. The wind speed and direction play a big role particularly in long range shooting.
