Program: The D.A.R.E. Progam
Guests today included Police Chief Michael Spera, Officer Sam Barnes, Officer Ryan Walsh, Det. David Perrotti, Officer Jim Cappa, Principal Michael Rafferty, students who won the essay contest, and proud parents. We were given a brief history of this program by Michael Spera and Sam Barnes who acknowledged the club's support through the years going back to 1986. This program has been cut in other communities but not so in Old Saybrook. Michael Rafferty acknowledged the value of this program and thanked the club for its support as well. Charlie Norz, chairman of our foundation, said the program is in next years budget as well.
We heard from the kids next. They read their essays to the club speaking about the importance of avoiding drugs and alcohol and making safe choices as they grow up. They spoke of the dangers of alcohol, marijuana and other drugs. Second hand smoke also poses a danger to those around it. As they grow up, kids will have many choices to make without adults around to guide them so its important they are given the tools to make informed decisions.
Sam thanked Gerri for coodinating this meeting. A check for $2,000 from the club was presented to the Old Saybrook police following the essays.

The Foundation Budget: Charlie Norz, Chairman
Following the program, Charlie presented the club with the new operating budget for the coming fiscal year. There was much discussion that went into it. Income and expenditures are expected to be $57,250. Our scholarhip program will be changing starting next year. To allow better flexibility, the club will award 1 year scholarships instead of 2 and 4 year. The amount awarded may go up and the number awarded may also increase as our current committments wind down. We increased our donation to the soup kitchen to $1,000. The budget was done with the current economy and return on investments in mind. Next years chairman will be Brent Taylor. Other board members are David Wight (club treasurer), Paul Moore (past president), Charlie Norz (replaces Bob Chase), Bob Hester (replaces Joan Camire), Rick Beck (replaces Keith Wesovich who will be club president).

THE FOUR-WAY TEST
of the things we think, say or do
First...
Is it the TRUTH ?
Second....
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Third....
Will it build GOOD WILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Fourth....
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
