PROGRAM:
This was our scholarship awards meeting - the culmination of a year-long effort of club fundraisers and of course the work of this important committee. Chaired by Ron Scott, the committee consists of Shirley Von Dassel (Old Saybrook), Ed Pinn (Old Lyme) and Ran King (Westbrook). Ron reports that last year we spent $19,000 on scholarships and this year it is climbing to $21,000. It is hoped that the students who benefit get a sense of volunteerism and community involvement as they further their educations. The average cost of a 4 year college is up to $38,000 per year. 32 applicants were evaluated and 12 were interviewed. Four year awards are $1500 per year and two year awards are $1000 per year.
The scholarship recipients for the fall semester 2006 are as follows:
Old Saybrook:
Jessica D. Kotulski (4 year, Endicott College, English Major)
Caitlin M. Reynolds (2 year, UCONN Avery Point, Graphic Design)
Old Lyme:
Jennifer F. Chmielewski (4 year, Dickinson College, Biology)
Jennifer E. Czarnowski (2 year, UCONN, Business)
Westbrook:
Amber K. Lenahan (4 year, Univ. South Carolina, Liberal Arts)
Courtney R. Hirst (2 year, Southern Connecticut State Univ, Education)

CLUB BUSINESS:
Matt Rubin thanked all who volunteered for the Amistad. In 11 hours, 1500 people came through. Matt and others experienced rough seas but survived. 100 middle school kids and high school kids also went on board for a sail.

Peter Manley and Stan Niemerski represented the club at the tree planting in Old Lyme on Saturday.

Charlie reported that an RFP has gone out for the dictionaries.

Marty talked about the website and asked everyone to check it out and update their information if necessary.

Jess is stepping down as treasurer after 5 years and needs a volunteer. He will train and help out during golf tournament time. Its fairly straight forward using MS Excel..you don't need to be an accountant or financial wiz.

Mark your calendars..June 28 meeting at Dock & Dine..CHANGING OF THE GUARD!
