Program: Amber Sherber, Teacher at OSHS
Amber Sherber is the Interact advisor and she gave a slide presentation of the club's busy year. In the fall, Interact members worked at the Old Lyme Cong. Church soup kitchen preparing meals, serving and interacting with the people. In all, they served approx. 150 meals. 4 students attended Rotary programs, RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) and 1 student attended the World Affairs Seminar at Whitewater. The club took part in the Invisible Children project (Project leader, Garnet McLaughlin) which provides gently used clothing and shoes to local people displaced by fire. Garnet led other projects including a Powderpuff Football game, Karaoke night, Battle Royale and Jersey Shore Dance fundraisers. Led by project leaders Matt McKee and Jon Drobiarz and lead carpenter Cody Bell, the club built and delivered an 8x10' shed as part of the Habitat for Humanity program. A family in Middletown, who had a Habitat house built, was the recipient of this shed and was very grateful. One of the children had a bike stolen and now they can store and lock their possessions. The Interact kids took a collection and bought the child a new mountain bike as well! The Interact Club participated in the Penguin Plunge, a fundraiser on Feb. 27, 2010 at Hammonasset Beach that raised $555 for the Special Olympics. They also took part in the Ford Test Drive fundraiser in which Ford donated money to the club for every test drive. The club also raised money by selling water bottles and roses at high school productions such as Beauty and the Beast. They also sold cookies and carnations during Valentines week to help raise money for Haiti. Inspired by Jillian Thorpe, an Old Saybrook alumnus who was in Haiti during the devastating earthquake, they raised $722 Haiti relief.
In all, the club had a very busy and productive year, giving of themselves to help others - Rotary ideals. The club raised about $2500 for the year. We can all be proud supporting this great group of kids and their wonderful leader, Amber Sherber!
