Announcements:
Bob Antoniac:
We need volunteers to fill some time slots particularly Saturday afternoon from 3-5 and Sunday from 9-1. We expect to be busier this year since we are the only food booth serving real food and beverages. This is truly a club participation project. Please help out and have some fun at the same time! Free hotdogs for helpers!
Keith: Through a donation from our Outreach Program, The HOPE Partnership gave gift baskets with household items to those in need.
Ed Pinn: Next weeks speaker is a former correspondent for the LA Times who did duty in the middle east. She will talk about the state of affairs in Syria and Lebanon. Don't miss it!
John Donnelly: On Saturday July 28, there will be a district seminar on Rotary matching grants. It runs from 8am to 2pm at the Deep River Congregational Church.
Paul Moore: Please volunteer your time for the Sail Connecticut Access program which our club supported through matching grants with the Madison Club. Its at the Brewers Pilot Point Marina. Part of the stipulation of the grant is club participation in the project. Go to
sailconnecticutaccess.org for more information.
The Schedule: We sail each week from June 1 through September 30 on Wednesday through Saturday. Sails are 2 hours long, dock to dock. We sail from 10 am to 4 pm. Sails can be scheduled to begin between 10 am and 2 pm. Acomodations can be made, for special circumstances, for sails on Sundays, Mondays or Tuesdays. However, these sails depend on our finding volunteer skippers that are able to do these sails.
John Donnelly: You may not be aware but there is an active book collection activity going on by John and Bill McLaughlin. They've been gathering books and storing them at John's office to be delivered to Steve Mecca who arranges them to go by container to Africa. John and Bill can use some help! Please contact John and learn how.

Program: Bill McLaughlin, World Affairs Seminar
For a more detailed explanation, go to click on the World Affairs section on this main page. Ron Scott was a big booster of this program and today, we continue this program by sending a student from each of the high schools in our jurisdiction: Westbrook, Lyme-Old Lyme and Old Saybrook. This years attendees were:
Christie De Antonis, Old Saybrook High School

Karim Abdel-Jalil, Westbrook High School

Amanda Burke, Lyme-Old Lyme High School
Christie, Karim and Amanda met other students from around the country and world and discussed topics of interest such as the impact of technology, e-waste, deforestation, the world water supply, overpopulation and more. They attended small group sessions and heard from speakers from as far away as South Africa who spoke of topics including technology and police action. There was a talent show, triva night, movie night and basketball to name a few activities.
The kids all agreed this was a great opportunity to meet others in all walks of life and get a little exposure to dorm life - a precursor to college life. They were sad to say goodbye to some new friends.
