Guest:  Our Rotary guest was Joe Pearsey from Market Depping in Lincolnshire, England.
He gave us a little history about his town and the 'Fenns' which have all dried up and
now are fertile farmland.  His town also has an old and a newer jail, but I gathered
there's not mucch need for either.  He's visiting his daughter who lives in Old Saybrook
with her husband who works for Pfizer.
Program:  Bill McLaughlin introduced our speaker today who was John Farrara of the
"Literacy Volunteers' program run out of the Library in Westbrook.  The program has
been in operation for the past 30 years.  It is made up of tutors from all walks of life
not just educators and teachers.  The average age of the volunteer tutor is 55 years.
Last year 189 students participated with an equal number of volunteers.  Some of the
students are parents of school age children who speak fairly good English and wish
their parents could do the same.  Some employers of these students even allow the
tutoring to be done during work time, since they feel it's to their benefit to have their
workers more productive.  Tutors must committ to 1 year of service with an average
of 3 hours per week instruction.  Since inception the organization has performed
21,000 hours of tutoring.  Last year 11 of the students received US citizenship due
to their participation in the program.  Anyone interested in finding out more about
the program or becoming a tutor can contact John Farrara.
Announcements:   Bill McLaughlin needs some programs for September and October.
President Paul announced a 'Dress up Your Pet Day' in Old Lyme.  There seemed
to be no interest in that.  He also announced that Kirby Kloter, a prospective new
member has been in the hospital and would appreciate cards.  He lives on Penny-
wise Lane.  Also, Ron Scott is home from the hospital and would appreciate calls.
Brent Taylor announced the Niantic Rotary Club is having it's golf tourney on August
22nd.  Anyone interested should contact Brent.  The fee is $115.
John Donnelly announced he is back in the books for Ghana business.  Give any
donations to John and he's see they get into the right hands.
Marty announced the wine tasting fundraiser will be at the Saybrook Point Inn again
on Sunday November 20th (Friday & Saturday were not open).  Since it's on a Sunday
we're considering an earlier start and conclusion, maybe 4-9 PM.
Bill McLaughlin announced the Chamber is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the
bridge over the river, replacing the ferry service.  There will be an antique car parade
over the bridge to Old Lyme and back with a luncheon and speakers at Dock & Dine.
The price of the luncheon program is $35. Anyone interested can get details from Bill.
