Student of the Month History
The Rotary Club of Old Saybrook sponsors a Student of the Month Program designed to highlight and celebrate outstanding high school students throughout the academic year. The program launched in 1990 and has run continuously ever since, identifying students from Old Saybrook, Westbrook and Old Lyme. The program recognizes excellence across nine academic disciplines, ensuring that a wide range of student achievements are honored from October through June.
Each month, the Rotary Club hosts a formal Awards Breakfast at the Saybrook Point Resort & Marina, held on the second Wednesday of the month. This event brings together students, their families, school administrators, teachers, and Rotary members in a supportive and celebratory setting. The breakfast serves not only as a recognition ceremony but also as an opportunity for community engagement and encouragement of academic excellence.
Each selected student receives a certificate and is awarded $50, also, a donation of $50 is made to Rotary International/Polio Plus in the name of the student.
For each discipline, the department heads select one student who exemplifies exceptional performance, dedication, character, and enthusiasm for learning. During the breakfast, the nominating teacher introduces the student, provides a brief biography, and explains the specific accomplishments and qualities that led to the student’s selection as Student of the Month. These presentations highlight both academic achievement and personal growth, giving attendees a deeper understanding of each student’s contributions to the school community.
The program follows a structured monthly schedule, with each academic area featured in a specific month:
- October – English
- November – Mathematics
- December – Social Studies
- January – Science
- February – World Language
- March – Technology
- April – Fine Arts
- May – Business
- June – Health Education / Health
By recognizing students across such a broad spectrum of disciplines, The Rotary Club of Old Saybrook reinforces its commitment to supporting education, encouraging leadership, and celebrating the diverse talents of local youth. The Student of the Month Program has become a valued tradition within the community, fostering pride, motivation, and connection among students, families, educators, and Rotary members alike.
