We had several guest speakers today. Kerry Burke and Colleen Huysman from the Interact Club discussed their upcoming trip to Foley, Alabama along with 5 other students during their February vacation to build and repair homes in this area which was devastated by Hurricane Katrina. The project is through the Habitat for Humanity Collegiate Challenge. Donations for transportation, food and other expenses are appreciated. Checks can be mailed to Old Saybrook High School, 1111 Boston Post Rd., Old Saybrook, CT  06475 payable to OSHS Activity Fund.
Ed Mattson from Rotary International spoke about his area of expertise which is cancer treatment and his work with Rotary in setting up and sustaining clinics overseas. He will return and provide a full program in the near future. Matt Rubin was our scheduled guest speaker. He spoke about the soup kitchen and the important work they do in feeding those less fortunate. The number of people in need is surprisingly large considering Middlesex County has the highest per capita income in the country. The soup kitchen is so efficient, the cost of a meal is only $0.25 each. Matt is selling restaurant coupon books for $35 the proceeds of which goes to the soup kitchen. Buy one entree, get the second at half price. Each coupon book sold provides 140 meals.
