PRESIDENT’S UPDATE

  • Old Saybrook Chamber invites us to have tent and booth at Chili Fest Saturday February, 26, 2022. We will do a sponsorship
  • Afghan resettlement a District7980 project, we are in, stay in touch with local churches, Christ the King, St Ann’s, and The Old Lyme Congregational Church re: the Afghan family in Old Lyme

PROGRAM
State Representative Devin Carney

Fellow Rotarian Devin Carney spoke to The Club about the upcoming session in Hartford. The 2022 Session will be a short session primarily designed to work on the budget, although there will be many issues discussed.

Session will be a combination of Virtual and Hybrid.

  • Discuss Executive Orders, expire 02/15/2022, and mandates
  • Mask mandates in schools may be maybe returned to the cities and towns.
  • Nursing home entry rules to be addressed.

Devin is a ranking member of the Transportation Committee, and a member of the Finance and Education Committees.

TRANSPORTATION

  • Transportation projects include work on the Gold Star Memorial Bridge, Connecticut River RR Bridge, and the Haddam-East Haddam Bridge.
  • Discuss EV sales direct to customers

EDUCATION
- Discuss funding
- Discuss mandates
- Discuss virtual learning

TRASH TO ENERGY
- Hartford Plant old and needs updating
- Mayor of Hartford against the plant
- Tipping fees are large
- Need a solution

MENTAL HEALTH
Discuss abuse issues

CRIMINAL JUSTICE
- Youth crime
- Talk about quick release of offenders
- Discuss keeping victims in mind

Questions and Answers followed Devin's talk including:

  • Marijuana is legal, need a license, need town approval, sale sites will be allotted on a lottery system.
  • Stability on Education essential C A P S
  • A reminder to keep in mind CT has a large surplus, consider debt reduction, and a tax reduction.

FUND RAISING

  • We are in gather mode so keep working on sponsorships and sell tickets

SHRED DAY, John Aforismo

  • Saturday April 9, 2022 dovetails with District National Service Day
  • E-mail sent to Chief Spera
