PROGRAM: Dave Fowler “Bikes for Kids”

Dave, thanked “The Club” for their continued support. His detailed description of the “Polar Express” event was well received. Members were made to feel confident that our donation of $1.000.00 was spent. Dave, thanked “The Club”, for “Bikes for Kids” has been in business for 33 years and has given away over 25,000 bicycles. Last year over 1,000 bikes a month were repaired and given out. Every bike given away includes a helmet, and bike lights.

Bikes go to cover local wants, and need, along with sometimes a world-wide distribution. Bikes have been sent to Africa abroad as well as nationwide. Bikes to Houston, TX following the hurricane. This fall 187 bikes went to Kellyville, OK to support their outreach. The stories are many and diverse.

In support of our effort to help the Afghan family in Old Lyme, Bikes for Kids has provided the entire family with a good reconditioned bike.

A large portion of BFK work is thru local social services and homeless shelters.

A recent story concerned a young man in West Hartford. He arose early everyday to walk to Conard High School for football practice.  A good bike cut his time spent getting to school. When the bike was presented to the lad, Dave also gave him a helmet. When he did not to wear the helmet, Dave asked, “do you wear a helmet at football practice”?  Answer yes, then you wear one on your bike, end of story.
