Wine & Beer Tasting and Silent Auction, April 10
Marty and Pete gave a progress report, everything is progressing nicely. Pete is starting to receive items and is keeping a spreadsheet, compiling and combining items. Please get your items in with the detail sheets as early as possible. The cutoff for receiving is April 3 so if your item is to be included in the book they have to be in to Pete (or Pete needs to be aware of it) by then. Nancy needs help with her items because the list is long and she has much to do as district governor elect. Please contact Nancy if you can help her out. Joan Winters has been busy promoting the event on social media. Please like and share - it helps.
Shredding Day, April 25
John Aforismo is preparing for the day. He has an article ready for publication. The first 100 boxes pays for the shredding truck. On average, we shred about 80,000 lbs. Small businesses are a great source of revenue because they have many boxes of documents to shred so let them know! At least 10 people are needed to run the event.
Rotary Sign
John Aforismo has been looking into this and has had no help from the town. John was told he needs to talk to the DOT of the State of Conn. Devin Carney is not aware of any new regulations concerning signs. Carl Fortuna may be asked to weigh in.
Rotary Four-Way Test Contest
Nancy Morin and Chip Adams are involved in this. Last years finals were at the Old Saybrook High School Auditorium. It was a huge success. People who attended were treated to outstanding performances! Judges are needed - they will decide the winners unlike last year which was judged by the audience. Old Saybrook, Westbrook, Lyme/Old Lyme students will give their speeches in the first two weeks of March. See Chip if you would like to be a judge for our local contest. The semi-finals are March 21 at Norwich Free Academy at 10:15 am, all are welcome to attend. 4-Way Speech District Finals are April 25th at Stratford High School. All Rotarians in the District are encouraged to attend. Please see Nancy if you would like to be a judge for the finals in Stratford.
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA)
April 11th, 8 am - 6 pm at Newtown Community Center
Chip Adams is heading this up. Students who have attended love the experience. Students who attend this one day RYLA gain practical leadership skills, build confidence, and discover their own ability to make a positive impact. We are hoping to sponsor 1 student from each of the towns of Old Saybrook, Westbrook, and Lyme/Old Lyme. Presently, the District is looking for 5 more students for the leadership team. Student recommendations are needed asap so please get back to Nancy if you have a student in mind.
Rotary Day of Service
One idea was food packing which was not accepted. Ideas are welcome. Collecting and distributing children's books is an idea. Ocean State Job Lot has indicated a desire to help support whatever is decided. Joan Winters is working on plans for Day of Service, which is May 16th. Nancy is working with the presidents of other clubs to try to come up with a team project we could all work on together at one location.
Summer meeting schedule
There was a suggestion that we have fewer meetings in the summer. For July and August, the first week would be off. More on this later.
Summer Concert Series
Nancy was asked by Parks & Rec if we would mind not being exclusive lead sponsors and share that distinction with a business in town. There would be no reduction in the cost. Currently, we attend concerts on the green but not the Harvey's Beach. The other sponsor could take those on. Nancy is looking for a chair or co-chair for the Summer Concert Committee.
Raffle
John suggested we do another raffle. The E-Bike raffle was very successful and we should think of doing another one. One idea is a Jet Blue trip for 2 to anywhere. Lets think about it and come up with some ideas.
Oranges from Florida
Ralph Stevens sent a box of oranges and tangerines to bring some sunshine and good wishes to the club! Much appreciated Ralph and we'll be seeing you soon!
