Essex Financial Presentation: Bill Tait delivered a presentation on the OS Rotary Foundation Fund portfolio. He explained that the fund was originally established with an endowment and is invested in a variety of funds that are both diversified and considered moderate in risk. The primary strategy for the portfolio is to generate sufficient income to support the obligations and mission of the OS Rotary, while preserving the principal balance of the fund.
Bill noted that 2025 was a strong year for the stock market, which resulted in positive performance for the fund. However, he also highlighted that 2026 is expected to bring events that could impact the financial market, including global volatility, the midterm elections, the 250th Anniversary, and the 2026 World Cup. In response, the goal remains to maintain a diversified portfolio, focusing on safe and stable investments.
Gary explained that the Foundation is overseen by a committee consisting of five members: Gary M, Alan S., Nancy M., Kathy C., and Charlie R. This committee monitors the fund’s performance and recommends changes as needed. The funds are primarily used to provide scholarships.
2026-2027 Budget: Jan reminded Committee Chairs to submit provide their budget requirements to Kathy Callinan by March 25th. That information is essential for planning for next year’s budget.
Marty provided an update on the Wine and Beer Event scheduled for April 10. Sponsors have contributed approximately $14,000 so far, which, so far, is significantly less than the amount raised in 2025. It is important to follow up with sponsors and continue efforts to solicit additional sponsoring organizations. Pete and Susan are working together to group the auction items into categories, making it easier for attendees to view and bid. More lottery tickets are needed for the Lottery Tree, and wine donations are needed for the wine wheelbarrow. Wine can be given to Pete at the next meeting, left at his home, or arrangements can be made for pickup. The final weeks will require a focused effort to ensure everything is in place for a successful event.
John A. discussed the upcoming shredding event scheduled for April 25th. Planning is progressing well, and more specific details will be provided as the date approaches. Non-perishable food will also be collected at the event. Weather remains a concern, with hopes for no rain!
Joan W. talked about the Day of Service, which will take place on May 16 and will be focused on Literacy. Locations in Old Saybrook, Westbrook, and Old Lyme are being determined. Proposed activities for the day include storytelling, drawing and coloring, book giveaways, book swaps, and music. The budget includes $200 from Rotary, $200 from Ocean State, and a grant request has been submitted. The Day of Service will be registered on the District Rotary website once the locations are finalized.
Nancy Morin reported on the 4-way test speech contest. The Semi-finals will take place this Saturday in Norwich at NFA, with an Old Lyme student participating. Successful students from the semi-finals will advance to the finals. Nancy also reminded members that it is time to select students for RYLA. She requested that members contact students and schools to gauge interest in attending.
The meeting was adjourned. The next club meeting is scheduled for March 25, 2026, at noon at VFW.
