Guest Speaker: Joan Winters introduced our guest, Gay Collins

Gay is a writer, teacher and speaker. She advocates for mental health and wellness, helping people find a positive and purposeful and actively participating life.
When people come together, they lift each other up. Conversation is what we are wired to do and feeling a bond with others through various connections is important to our mental well being. Gay has a deep stake and interest in children and their future. She is a teacher with long interest in wellness. Gay points out we are all teachers because we pass along information and behaviors to children. We have a big impact through our actions and words passing along honesty, civility, hope, faith, respect and more. Gay adds sanity or understanding or peace of mind as well. We've heard the quote, "the mind is a terrible thing to waste". How does the mind actually work? Its hard to explain and its very complicated. Our brain is so much more than a computer. Lack of understanding has consequences, for example the witch trials in Salem saw people burned at the stake.
Many children today suffer from depression and anxiety. We don't always see what's right in front of us. Our minds are always "on", never stops which is usually a good thing but can get us into trouble. The mind is a good servant but terrible master - we worry a lot. Its been said that all humanities' problems stem from our inability to sit quietly in a room. We are fundamentally ok and we all work the same way.

More from Gary:
May 18 we will be having a special meeting and are honoring a member with a Paul Harris Award. The meeting is at OL Country Club and Marty will be honored.

Shredding Day: John Aforismo heads this up and he reports we have 28 volunteers. He will be at the high school with Pat S and Marty to get set up (tents, tables, etc.) Our special district banner will be on display. The event runs to 12:00 and then help is needed to break down and do dump runs. Wear your new tees! Incoming District Gov. Tari Marshall-Dey will be there.

Wine & Beer Tasting and Silent Auction: Marty reported on progress for the Wine Tasting. We have resolved the permit issues. Saybrook Point Resort & Marina will provide the wines and service.
