Happy Bucks: The majority were for the students, parents, teachers, and administrators attending the program, several for the Rotary Club and its commitment to education, happy to be here, one for our guest and future member – Bill Quish, and several in memory of Bob Antoniac.

 Program: Student of the Month: Music & Fine Arts and World Language

Superintendent of Schools, Jan Perruccio, provided a brief history of the SOM Award and its relationship with PolioPlus. Jan then introduced the administrators and teachers from each of the schools.

WORLD LANGUAGE

Old Saybrook High School: World Language, Madelyn Beaudoin
     Teacher, Amy Claffey, and Principal, Joe Anastasio, described Madelyn as a natural leader both in the classroom and on the athletic field where she is the Captain of the Track Team. Her strength is her perseverance and incredible work ethic. In the Fall, she will be studying Spanish at the University of Connecticut.

Lyme/Old Lyme High School: World Language, Willa Hoerauf
     Teacher, Juan Vazquez-Caballero, and Assistant Principal, Jeanne Manfredi, described Willa as an outstanding student known for her dedication, enthusiasm, and a “Service Above Self” approach to her school and community. She has already earned nine college credits and has completed a two week trip to Spain to study the language and the Spanish culture.  

Westbrook High School: World Language, Vincent Naccarato
     Teacher, Amy Fortin, and Principal, Tara Winch, described Vin as a quiet leader who has taken the Interact Club from a new organization in the school to a student run club that has a large impact on the student body as well as the surrounding communities. He is known for his extra effort and his willingness to help others

MUSIC & FINE ARTS

Old Saybrook High School: Music & Fine Arts, Emiley Carmichael
     Teacher, Hannah Newton, and Principal, Joe Anastasio, described Emiley as a student with creative curiosity and initiative. In fact, she has taken over 80 hours of classes at the Rhode Island School of Design.

Lyme/Old Lyme High School: Music & Fine Arts, Grace Phaneuf
     Teacher, William Allik, and Assistant Principal, Jeanne Manfredi, described Grace a student who flies under the radar but who is actively involved in art as well as athletics. She has devoted all of her spare time, in and out of school, to drawing. This dedication to art has resulted in the Shoreline Arts Award and the student of the month award earned as a Junior.

Westbrook High School: Music & Fine Arts, Joshua Davey
     Teacher, Eric Gerhardt, and Principal, Tara Winch, described Josh as an exceptional talent although his brother says he is not “normal”. His specialty is music composition. He has not only taken every music course at WHS, but the music department added to its curriculum in order to challenge Josh and keep him interested.

Updates:
Shredding Event: John A reports that everything is all set for a very successful event, including the weather! (I’m predicting cloudy, cool, and very windy)
Golf Tournament: Last year’s tournament brochure will be updated and sent to the printer within the next two weeks. THE ROTARY – BRENT TAYLOR GOLF CLASSIC will be the tournament name again this year. Next meeting looking for volunteers.
Rotary Day of Service, May 20. Joan W announced that the day will be devoted to cleaning the town beaches in Westbrook, Old Saybrook, and Old Lyme.  Team leaders (volunteers needed) should show up at 8:30am to lead the effort. The cleanup is over when the beach is clean. Joan stated that “bathing suits are optional.”(What does that really mean?)
Memorial Day: We are signed up to march/ride in the parade down Main Street. 5/29
