OS Rotary Meeting 05/04/22

In attendance: Pete, Marty, Charlie R, Bill O, Gary (chair), Pat D, Nathan, Kathy, Jan, Alan, Christine, John A, Joan, Gail & guest (her sister)

Card game was played.

Raffle: no prizes available, so they’ll be given next week.  Winners were Nathan, Alan, and Pete.

Stephanie Hamilton, Brent Taylor’s daughter, has been in touch,  and will be a sponsor for the golf event in her father’s honor.  Charlie said that she and her family may make the trip to attend.  He reported that the recipient of the scholarship will be announced at next week’s meeting.

Jan reported that Senior Awards will be given on June 1st at the high school.

Gary noted that materials are in, for construction at the Transfer Station, and the builder has been informed.   A  12-ft retaining wall is needed before the structure is built.  A ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place in June with Carl and other dignitaries.  Parents will be informed about the Commodities Exchange through their children (as a way to re-use resources), and Pat D is taking care of the communications on this.  The old gazebo will be replaced with a new one, and we may be involved in adding enhancements to the immediate area.

Gary called our attention to the excellent article in the current edition of Rotary Magazine about the Rotary Clubs of Ukraine.

Marty provided a comprehensive update about Friday’s Wine-Tasting/Silent Auction fundraising event at Saybrook Point Inn.  The book is being assembled, with all information.  On Friday morning, Marty and Pat will pick up 80 balloons at Stop & Shop at 10, and deliver them to SPI.  Any volunteers can report to SPI at 10:30, to help set up and decorate.  Help will be needed transporting items from Marty’s place of business (where they’re stored) to SPI.   Pete and Gary will work with Scot Haney.  Raffle will begin at 7:30, Table 1 will “close” at 8, etc.  Green wrist bands will designate admission of ticket-holders.  Kathy reported 49 e-tickets and 100 regular tickets have been sold.  There is a room-capacity maximum. Probably around 250, which we’ll be aware of, because sponsors are admitted free (the exact number unknown till the event) and there will be attendees buying tickets at the door also.  SPI has selected the wines, tat are reasonably priced, and Seaside Liquors will be there taking orders.  SPI supplies all the wine, all the pouring, and the glasses.  For raffle items, the cards will have stubs that you place in a teacup.  Bidding increments were discussed in detail:  there will be a “starting bid” determined at 20% of the value of the item, then minimum “bidding increments” will be posted on each card.

The Paul Harris Dinner will honor deserving recipient Marty this year, and will take place on May 18th at the Old Lyme Country Club, 40 McCurdy Road, 6-9 PM, at a cost of $70 per ticket.

Planning to be underway for the Summer Concert Series.

Our next meeting (May 11th) will be 7 AM breakfast at Saybrook Point Inn, for the Students of the Month.  (No meeting on the 18th.)

We will return to Penny Lane Pub at noon for the May 25th meeting.  Jan will be the guest speaker!  Jan noted that the School Budget meeting will take place on May 10th.

The Foundation meeting will be a Zoom event.  Outreach announced with Joan W.  The Website has rendered good ticket sales, per Marty.  Pete reported that the Malloys are very  interested in membership (Pat D gave them a collection of Rotary Magazines for their interest).  We’re all set for Speakers scheduled for upcoming meetings.

John A reported that the only available date at Fireman’s Field for the Macaroni Dinner, is Sunday, October 16th .

There was a discussion about the best dates for the Golf Tournament, and changing from a public to a private golf course.  A vote determined that the date will be Monday, October 3rd.
