Jan spoke about her time at the Rotary International convention in Calgary, Canada. Bill Gates gave a live video talking about climate and the importance to talk about it.The Premier of Alberta from Lake Louise, Calgary attended. The Executive Director of World Health Organization (WHO) also spoke of great needs and challenges world wide.The area is pristine, there were Rotarians everywhere - 16,000 from 140 countries. The flags representing the countries made for an impressive display including native peoples (Black Foot tribes, etc.). There were breakout sessions that Jan learned from and picked up ideas. There were district parties and a multitude of fellowship groups. Next years convention is in Taipei, Thailand. Bill McLaughlin attended the RI Convention in Chicago in 2005. Bill recommends it wholeheartedly - you'll learn a lot about Rotary.
Rotary International's new President is Francesco Arezzco from Italy. He is is an orthodontist in private practice. He is active internationally as a member of the Italian, European, and American orthodontics associations. He is vice president of the National Association of Italian Dentists for the province of Ragusa and was the founder and head for seven years of the delegation for Ragusa of the National Trust for Italy.
Pete Zucco: The Foundation Bylaws have been updated. There was a motion to accept and was approved by unanimous vote.
Gary McCauley: Fundraising
John and Gary are leading the effort to add a fundraiser for club activities. One idea is a raffle for an electric bike with the drawing at the Crafts Fair. Another idea is a second shred day in September. The club voted approval for this.
Marty Drobiarz talked about a survey that will be sent out to find out the club's preferences for meeting times and venues. The survey will be sent out via email this week. Marty requests everyone respond asap with a week deadline. Decisions need to me made soon so responses with comments are appreciated.
The group in attendance broke up into smaller groups to come up with ideas to promote, engage and generally brainstorm for 2 big initiatives: food insecurity and literacy.
Golf Tournament: Charlie Renshaw
Charlie talked about our Brent Taylor Golf Classic Sept. 8 at Fox Hopyard an important fundraiser. Much preparation has been done: The applications have been printed, the website page updated and the QR code linking to the payment page is set up. We now have to work to invite golfers and sponsors to support the event. Everything you need to know is on the brochure. At just $200, golfers get a great value playing a great course and post tournament party including buffet. Golfers pay the cost of the tournament but is the sponsors where the club actually makes its money to fund our projects. Its important to let Charlie know if you have a new sponsor so a sign can be made.
The time is now to begin working on selling the tournament! Help will be needed to run the tournament (registration, selling raffle tickets and mulligans, hole-in-one witness). Raffle items are needed as well so donations of items and gift cards are welcome.
- Nancy: Summer Concert on the Green tonight - Rotary will be there with our tent and raffle give-aways will happen.
- Jan: Everyone is aware of the flooding disaster in Texas that claimed many lives and caused great devastation. DG Stephanie Philips will help guide us to send funds to a club in Kerr County. At tonight's concert, we will be collecting money to send.
- Gary: In a recent town report, our club was mentioned for starting the Commodities Exchange at the town Transfer Station. Great success!
