Alan discussed the following topics:

  • Tonight the Meadows Brothers play at the Concert Series which is on the Town Green. Alan asked should we continue to provide bottled water and after some discussion related to plastics and the environment, it was decided we should no longer provide it. There will be 2 raffles tonight. At the Westbrook concert, Engine Room, Friday August 4 at the Westbrook Town Green 5:30 - 7:30, we'll put up the cannopy, have a raffle and hand out club information. Debra Lee bought a wood box which can be used for donations - nice idea. It'll be decorated with the logo and signage
  • After some discussion, it was decided to increase the Student of the Month stipend from $25 to $50. In addition, our donation to Polio Plus will increase from $25 to $50.
  • Joan Winters is heading up our participation in the Old Lyme Festival July 29, a celebration of art, music, food and family fun. It runs 9am to 3pm and help is needed in 1 hour increments to man the tent and be there to answer inquiries and hand out literature.
  • Discussion about getting sponsors for our fundraisers followed. A database should be developed to enhance efficiency and avoid duplicate solicitations. John Aforismo spoke about a possible fundraiser with local appeal - board games. More on that later.
  • Attendance: while there is no longer a minimum meeting attendance requirement, it is important to attend meetings and functions to get the full benefit of Rotary. Nancy will be encouraging new members to come to the meetings.
  • A venue for a 5th meeting is needed. Something nice at reasonable cost is ideal. Some suggestions include The Hideaway Restaurant, Old Lyme Inn and a self-catered meeting at the Old Saybrook Pavilion.
  • Golf Tournament: Charlie is getting nervous because not much has come in yet in terms of sponsors and golfers. Lets get to work - time is running short! The tournament is Aug. 28. The sponsor deadline is Aug. 7, Aug. 11 for new sponsors.
    • Raffle prizes big and small are needed. See Gary if you have any items. Gary thought a great raffle prize would be a lottery tree like we did at the Wine Tasting. Feel free to donate scratch-off tickets to add to the tree.
  • Gary reports the "Commodities Exchange" at the Transfer Station is making progress. The roof had to be reordered. There will be a grand opening - stay tuned!
  • New members to be inducted: Debra Lee, Aug. 9 and Rosanne Farrell, Aug. 2. We are all happy to welcome these 2 fine people!
