Business

The topic of the day of course was the golf tournament, scheduled for Thursday Aug. 19 which was unfortunately postponed to Oct. 7 due to the threat of lightening and thunder showers coming through the area. We can still work on getting more golfers and sponsors keeping in mind that some players will have to decline due to date conflict and refunds will be given. We'll have to learn that process with Stripe first. Eventgroove has been updated.

Following a tour of the facility, Dave and Nancy spoke about the business and what makes Cardone & Daughter a truly unique business in the automotive relm. In 26 years, they have repaired and/or restored over 46,000 vehicles. The business plan is: service and repair any make, any year, any country, any decade. They don't do body work and upholstery but everything else. There are 11 employees - all hired for their expertise and ability to work well with others. 80% of their work is on vintage autos, 20% on contemporary autos. They have an open shop policy - the public is welcome to walk through the shop any time (no appointment necessary) and look at the cars in various stages of repair and restoration.

Often cars have been idle for many years so getting it running again is a big challenge but thats what they do. Dave said he has over 1,000 suppliers across the country, there is a subculture that exists for getting parts. Some suppliers specialize in certain makes or maybe one particular make and year. The internet has been a huge help for finding parts. Dave has the first car he bought for $27.50 when he was 13 years old. The car is in his shop and runs!

When he's not running his business, Dave is an actor and has appeared in many plays in the shoreline area including Ivoryton Playhouse, the Kate, Goodspeed and more. He and wife Nancy met at a community theater.

Next meeting is breakfast at the Parthenon Diner, Wed Aug. 25.
