OS Rotary Meeting 08/31/22

Attending:  Pat, Patty, Gail, Joan M, Nancy M, Christina, Ralph, Nathan, Pete, Alan, John A, John D, Joe, Bill M, Bill O, and Marty.

After the preliminaries, there was a discussion of nomenclature  --  “Rotary Club of Old Saybrook”  versus  “Old Saybrook Rotary Club” and leaving the word 'Club' out altogether. And,  though there was no consensus,  it’s important not to remember the inclusion of Westbrook and Lyme/Old Lyme.

President's report:

  • The Alzheimer’s Association acknowledged the $1,000 gift with gratitude.
  • Knollwood Beach Association requested an article about Rotary for its newsletter, Joan W has furnished one.
  • Internet recertification will be forthcoming.
  • Pictures of pollinators were beautiful and will be forwarded to Tari.
  • We’ll be getting more information on at least 3 proposed International Projects to consider.
  • Joe requests help for his Lobster event on Saturday.

Program:
Alan introduced guest speaker Amanda Brouwer, Library Director of Acton Public Library in Old Saybrook

Amanda gave an overview of her background and extensive experience, followed by news of recent innovations including a new logo, reflective of the library’s mission to become a “stronger community partner.”  She described the history of the library since its founding in the 19th Century, and reviewed the numerous services it currently provides ( “for everyone, babies through adults”) as an active participant in a 30-member library consortium, which helps reduce purchases for Old Saybrook’s collection.  Following a comprehensive Strategic Plan, and a grant which paid for an architectural study, there will be renovations to better utilize library space by increasing flexibility within the building and expanding to take better advantage of the outdoors.  Despite the challenges of Covid, library services have continued to adapt and develop, with curbside service and pick-up lockers, and new lending materials such as a telescope, a metal detector, and various games available for circulation. (Nancy mentioned how much her family enjoys the ”Yard Tumble Blocks”!)   She answered questions about library cards (yes, Bill, they need to be renewed!), the availability of E-books, and culling the collection for materials that may present misinformation.  She told members that the library would certainly be grateful for new laptops through the Rotary Club, that would allow more services to go out to the community.

Patty and Gail gave an update on the Arts & Crafts Festival. (Gail mentioned how generous businesses have been, how effective personal contact and correspondence have  been, and needed a quantity for water bottle donations).  Pat gave an update on the Golf Tournament (Brent’s daughter Sandy will be speaking) and requested more sponsors and golfers; he’ll be addressing the Chamber of Commerce about it, and Joan has been in contact with the cart company.  John gave an update on the Macaroni Dinner, bag supplier, and ticket sales.

Joan M discussed outreach (Polar Express and Bikes for Kids),  Pete updated prospective new members (he’s requested their background information).  Pat mentioned that many Clubs are experience a decline in membership, but ours is gaining new members!  Bill M gave a description of upcoming speakers.  There is no meeting next week due to Labor Day holiday, and the next meeting will be at the Estuary on Sept. 13th.

Respectfully submitted by Nathan.
