Guest Speaker Introduction: Pete Zucco introduced Barbara Labriola, Old Saybrook’s town treasurer. Barbara outlined her responsibilities, which include reviewing town revenue and expenses and selecting investments that support financial stability. This part-time role is performed primarily from home rather than at Town Hall. The money invested is in safe funds working with financial advisors and government supported agencies. Old Saybrook has maintained a very low debt rate which has enabled a low mill rate and property taxes. The rate of return is between 3.9% and 4.2% and provides a steady stream of income. The largest percentage of the Town’s budget is used for education system. If the referendum of the Kate project passes, it would require the town to obtain a Bond as well as requesting grants.
The next speaker was Nicole Nalepa, who has emceed many of Old Saybrook’s Wine and Beer Tasting & Silent Auctions with Scot Haney. She spoke about the Connecticut Cancer Foundation of Old Saybrook, which supports local cancer patients and their families throughout diagnosis and treatment. Founded by a former Yankees pitcher who lived in Old Saybrook, the organization is located at 1600 Main Street. Everyone is invited to visit its beautiful building, view the artwork, and learn more about its services.
They are holding a fund raiser called “No Shave CT.” Any person or group can take part by donating or supporting a participant or team. Sponsors would be appreciated and all of monies raised will be given to cancer patients and their families for their needs.
