Happy Bucks: Most were for the students, teachers, administrators, and parents. Devin was happy for the three best school districts in the state and extra happy to have recently become engaged. Congratulations! Several were for the upcoming Macaroni Dinner and the recent Arts and Crafts Festival. And last but not least, for the Yankees and the N.Y. Giants!
Program: Student of the Month - English
Tara welcomed everyone and gave a brief history of the Student of the Month Award. Did you know that SOM Award is being presented for the 36th year? And that SOM has recognized over 780 deserving students during that time? Well done Rotary Club of Old Saybrook! Tara then introduced the students, teachers, and administrators.
Lyme/Old Lyme High School: Maya Cook
Assistant Principal, Mr. Bushnell, and teacher, Ms. Burke, described Maya as the student who best represents the school’s core values and who definitely demonstrates a “can do spirit”. Maya is willing to help others both in and out of the classroom. She is on the Crew Team and is also President of the Student Council. Although her passion is creative writing, Maya plans on majoring in Biology in college next year.
Old Saybrook High School: Samantha Walsh
Principal, Mr. Anastasio, described Sam as a true Renaissance Woman. Her many activities include Youth in Government, Drama Club, starring in the stage production of Little Women, and President of the National Honor Society. During the previous school year, Sam was instrumental in establishing a new AP Government Course to be added to the high school curriculum. She is known as a “thinker” with the ability to analyze any situation. Next Fall, Sam will be majoring in Psychology with the goal of attending Law School.
Westbrook High School: Anjali Cotton
Principal, Mr. Talmadge, and teacher, Ms. Toman, described Anjali as a confident and involved leader. She is the vice president of the National Honor Society and the student representative on the Board of Education. She has actively participated in the Rotary’s RYLA leadership program as well as the World Affairs Seminar held in Wisconsin. Anjali has successfully completed 12 AP Classes. Her empathetic treatment of others, family values, commitment to quality matters, and classroom leadership skills, have earned her the title “Gift from God”. She will be majoring in Psychology with an ultimate goal of working in the medical field.

October Budget Update: Kathy reviewed the first quarter budget figures and answered any and all questions. Pete Z. thanked Kathy for a job well done. Thank you Kathy for going that extra mile!
Arts and Crafts Follow-Up: Pete and John A. reported a net income of $2100 and thanked everyone who worked on the two day event.
E-Bike Raffle: Gary and John A. reported that 279 tickets were sold resulting in a $3000 profit. A total of 100 tickets were sold at the Shred Day Event and the Arts and Crafts Festival. The winner was Casey Constable.
Macaroni Dinner: John A. reminded us of the set-up date 10/18 and the event date 10/19. See John to sign up for a work shift. Sell those tickets! We are only half way to our goal.
Information about Old Saybrook’s Starlight event was handed out. We will decide at the next meeting our level of participation.
The Funeral Service for Rotarian Donna Lash will be held 10/10 at 11:00 am at the St. John Church.
