Student of the Month: Mathematics
Tara Winch explained the SOM program and its relationship with Rotary International’s PolioPlus project. She then introduced the students, teachers, and administrators.
Old Saybrook High School: Casey DeAngelo
Assistant principal, Mr. Plotkin, and teacher, Ms. Sousa, described Casey as a remarkable student who excels in the classroom as well as on the athletic field. He is a “joy to have in class”. He has not only successfully completed every AP Math course, but Casey also continues to help fellow students (and teachers) with his Math knowledge and his enthusiasm and high energy. Out of the classroom, Casey is busy serving as Captain of the Soccer and Golf Teams. He is also a valuable member of the Quiz Bowl and Math Teams. Casey will be majoring in Aerospace Engineering.
Lyme/OldLyme High School: Tyler Cann
Assistant principal, Mr. Bushnell, and teacher, Ms. Leen said that choosing Tyler as the Math SOM was the easiest decision they have had to make in a long time. “You can turn to Tyler for help with anything”. If you need a top scorer on the Math Team, see Tyler. If a Captain is needed for the Track Team, see Tyler. If you need help with an AP course, see Tyler. If you need an MC for an event, see Tyler. In fact, if you need help with anything at any time, see Tyler. Good luck to Tyler as he studies Electrical Engineering next Fall.
Westbrook High School: Katie Ford
Assistant principal, Ms. Gallagher, and teacher, Dr. Rickaby, described Katie as the “Calculus Answerbook”! She not only helps her fellow classmates but she also “lifts up everyone in the classroom” with her positive attitude and infectious enthusiasm. We were treated to a reading of an excerpt from a short story written by Katie which foreshadowed her successful high school Field Hockey career. Dr. Rickaby said it best:” I was so fortunate to have her in my class.” Katie will be a Math/Biology Major next year.
Committee Reports:
Board of Directors: The Hundred Year Celebration Committee will be forming in the near future. $2,000 was donated to Soup Kitchen. Our Holiday Celebration will take place on 12/17 at noon. Site TBD. John A. is investigating possible sites around town(s) to place the Rotary Club signs.
Turkey Legs Fundraiser: Chip reported that OSHS, under the direction of Amber Scherber, raised $520 for the Thanksgiving food drive.
Outreach: Tara requested $500 for the DECA Club from OSHS to help lower the student cost to attend a Business Conference in Washington D.C. The DECA Club is for students interested in pursuing careers in marketing, business management, finance, or hospitality and tourism. Request approved.
Food Drive: Joan reported that two drives would take place at Stop and Shop. November 21st from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM and December 6th. See Joan to volunteer. Reminder: we will be packing up and delivering Thanksgiving Meals in Westbrook on November 26th at 7:00 AM. See Gary for details and to volunteer.
Club Fundraiser: We have come into possession of many of Roger Eppley prints. These prints are of historic sites around Old Saybrook. The plan is to sell them for $120 or $150 if mounted. See Pete Z. if interested.
Torchlight Parade December 13th: set up is at 5:00 PM. Volunteers needed for getting donations, set up, tent patrol, hot chocolate prep, and cleanup. This is our 37th year of participation - a community service event that's a lot of fun and appreciated! Let Marty know if you are available to help.
