Program:
Marty introduced Tony Cronin, Business and Financial editor for The Day newspaper. Tony got the newspaper bug at UCONN when he worked for the Daily Campus student run newspaper. The Day is a commity paper and as such, has more of a connection with its 38,000 readers than the large metropolitan papers. Tony has been trying to get more articles about Old Saybrook and surrounding towns - an area often neglected. While circulation has declined, The Day's internet division is growing especially among young people. The Day also features other revenue producers such as Grace Magazine and the Chamber Publication that comes out annually. Remote reporting is coming back. Breaking news can appear almost instantly on the web. The days of the IBM Selectric are over as is word processing. Now everyone it seems has a PC online. Tony enjoys working at The Day because it is an independent paper with no ties to special interests. Each year The Day donates hundreds of thousands of dollars to worthy causes in the area including the Garde Theater and United Way. An independent Board of Directors (Bowdoin Trust) decides on where the funds (most of the profit) go.
