Bill McLaughlin is looking for some programs for the fall, please contact him with ideas.
Program:  John Donnelly introduced our speaker today, Richard Connif of Old Lyme, a
wildlife writer who written two books and numerous related articles articles for
National Geographic .  He writes about how the natural world works and the quirks
of various species such as cheetas, leopards, army ants, jellyfish, spiders and many
more.  As such he has travelled all over the world, sometimes with his sons. His two
books  are  "Swimming with Piranhas at Feeding Time", "My Life doing Dumb Stuff with
Animals".  He related a couple of incidents he experienced.  The first was swimming
with piranhas in a Dallas aqarium, no problem.  The next time was in the Amazon
among wild fish.  He was trying to debunk the story that piranhas go into a feeding
frenzy with anything in the water.  Teddy Roosevelt started this myth, but the truth
is that they only will attack if a prey suddenly  falls into the water and makes a
disturbance.  Another story he related was debunking the theory that the wild dogs
of Africa will atack anything and go into a killing frenzy.  He did this by tracking a
pack of wild dogs and then got out of the Land Rover and sat down in the midst of
them.  They immediately stood up and two came right up to him and sniffed while
another snuck up in back and examined his neck.  His two youg sons who were
with him suggested that it might have been more interesting if he got up and ran.
All in all Richard gave a very interesting talk enjoyed by the membership.
Final Announcement:  Help is still needed for the food booth this weekend.
Anyone who hasn't signed up and can help or put in more hours should contact
    Bob Antoniac or Brett.
