Ken Gibble has resigned from the club.
Peter Manley spoke of the evening meeting on Aug. 30 aboard the River Quest from 6:15 to 8:30pm. There is a 40 person limit - first come-first serve. The cost is $30 which includes a box dinner, BYOB. Should be fun evening of fellowship.
Matt Rubin is selling Dine Out books which benefit the Shoreline Soup Kitchen. A $35 investment can save you $180 and you help this important charity.
John Donnelly needs someone to host Julienne for 5 days beginning Aug. 20.
Our newest member was officially inducted. Mark Shropshire was inducted by Bill McLaughlin and Ed Pinn, Mark's sponsor. Welcome Mark!
Program:
Today's program was about the Middlesex County Community Foundation (MCCF). The main speaker was Patti Vassia, the President of MCCF. The Old Saybrook Foundation was established in the mid 80's largely due to the efforts of John Ellsworth. It has grown to a substantial sum and MCCF provides a possible management alternative. There are 500 community based foundations in the U.S. and 18 in Conn. MCCF provides over $700,000 in grants to things like the Estuary Council for Seniors and housing to benefit the local communities. Pat Crowley, the Treasurer who presides over the Finance and Investment Committee, meets quarterly with the Board of Directors to review their investments. Administrative costs are extremely low. Dave Royston talked about the process of allocating grants and how careful and thorough they are. There is much follow-up to insure the funds are being used in the manner it was intended. There are tax benefits for people who donate to MCCF and many people pass their assets on. MCCF also manages Charitable Gift Annuities which provides the donor with income while directing how their donation is to be allocated. MCCF could provide our club with professional management of our Foundation, a topic to be discussed by our Foundation Board.
